Dakota State University Leads the Way in Cybersecurity for Small Businesses

In honor of cybersecurity awareness month, Dakota State University (DSU) is making waves in the cybersecurity world by receiving a grant for the second time in three years through the Small Business Administration’s Cybersecurity for Small Business Pilot Program. This grant aims to assist small businesses in advancing their cybersecurity infrastructure and mitigating cyber threats.

DSU’s Paulson Center for Cyber and Economic Development is the only university in the nation to receive this grant twice, showcasing their commitment to ensuring cybersecurity is accessible and prioritized for small businesses across the state. Dr. Ashley Podhradsky, vice president for research and economic development at DSU, expressed their dedication to helping small businesses understand and address their cybersecurity needs through comprehensive training and education.

With the grant, DSU can provide detailed risk assessments and penetration tests to identify vulnerabilities for 50 to 75 small businesses each year. This proactive approach is crucial as 43 percent of cyberattacks target small businesses, highlighting the importance of understanding and protecting digital assets from malicious actors.

Additionally, DSU has been designated as a Google Cybersecurity Clinic, allowing the Paulson Center to offer critical training, resources, and tools to help South Dakota’s small businesses safeguard their operations and customers. This new designation further solidifies DSU’s position as a leader in cybersecurity assistance for small businesses.

Matt Paulson, founder and CEO of MarketBeat and a DSU alumnus, emphasized the significance of the grant in helping South Dakota small businesses thrive in the digital world. Bryson Patterson, district director of SBA South Dakota’s district office, praised DSU’s efforts in fortifying the nation’s digital economy and helping small businesses become cyber ready.

DSU’s success in receiving the grant highlights their ongoing commitment to cybersecurity education and assistance for small businesses. With cybersecurity threats on the rise, initiatives like the SBA’s Cybersecurity for Small Business Pilot Program are essential in helping small businesses protect their operations from costly disruptions. DSU’s leadership in this area sets a strong example for other institutions and underscores the importance of prioritizing cybersecurity in today’s digital landscape.
