The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Government Contracting: Insights from LMI CEO Doug Wagoner
LMI CEO Doug Wagoner is leading the charge in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for homeland security missions. At the recent Raymond James 2024 Defense and Government Conference, Wagoner emphasized the importance of AI becoming a standard in providing solutions to the government. He believes that AI will soon be as integrated into our lives as the internet.
Wagoner’s company, LMI, has launched the gen AI platform LIGER to help government agencies streamline their operations and harness actionable insights. The platform has already been sold to multiple customers, including the Army, which is using it in a gen AI pilot program.
Despite the federal government traditionally lagging in technology adoption, Wagoner noted that they are rapidly embracing gen AI and keeping pace with industry advancements. He sees major opportunities for innovation in generative AI and believes that the government is on par with the private sector in adopting this technology.
In addition to their AI initiatives, LMI has been making strategic acquisitions in the for-profit arena since 2022. After being acquired by Declaration Partners, Capitol Meridian Partners, and 22C Capital, LMI has made moves into the space market with the purchase of Synaptech and expanded its presence with the acquisition of JJR Solutions.
Looking ahead, Wagoner shared that LMI’s focus for the next two to three years includes winning more space business, diversifying their Intelligence Community business, and bolstering their cyber capabilities. The company’s M&A strategy revolves around gaining access, presence, and influence in key markets rather than simply buying revenue or growth.
