The American Physical Society (APS) has announced a new opening for the position of Director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations. This role, reporting to the Chief Experience and Engagement Officer, will play a crucial role in spearheading APS’s communication, media, public relations, and crisis response efforts.
The Director will be responsible for developing and executing integrated communication strategies aligned with APS’s goals, collaborating with marketing and brand leaders to ensure consistency, and managing the creation of various communication materials. They will also oversee media interactions, forge partnerships, and navigate crisis communications while actively contributing to APS’s managerial cohort.
In addition to strategic communication responsibilities, the Director will also be tasked with reputation management, coordinating crisis management team activities, conducting crisis simulation exercises, and ensuring appropriate crisis planning and support for events and meetings. They will work closely with internal and external teams to protect APS’s reputation and manage crisis-related SEO efforts and strategic ad campaigns.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in communications and risk management or a related discipline, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in communication and risk management leadership. They should have demonstrated success in leading PR and strategic communication teams, developing crisis management plans, and engaging stakeholders effectively.
This remote-first role will require significant travel, up to 30%, for visiting client sites, attending events, and participating in conferences and meetings. The salary for this position ranges from $147,600 to $202,950 per year, with the target starting range between $147,600 and $166,050 per year.
