Michigan Launches New Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation to Support Small Businesses in Defense Sector

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced the establishment of the Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation (ODAI) to support the state’s defense and aerospace sectors. The ODAI aims to increase awareness of Michigan’s capabilities, attract and expand businesses in the defense industry, and enhance commercial defense and aerospace segments.

One small business owner who stands to benefit from the ODAI is Greg McArthur, co-owner of NTL Industries in Sterling Heights. NTL Industries is a CNC precision machining shop that provides application components for military vehicles. McArthur expressed interest in learning how the ODAI plans to help small business owners like himself increase their defense contracts.

The defense industry contributes $30 billion in economic activity for Michigan, supporting over 116,000 jobs. With more than 1,100 companies supporting the aerospace and defense industry in Macomb County alone, the state has a strong foundation in this sector.

The ODAI’s appointment of Col. John Gutierrez, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) as its executive director signals a commitment to leveraging Michigan’s defense and aerospace capabilities. Gutierrez, with over 30 years of military experience, expressed excitement about working with government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders to enhance Michigan’s defense and aerospace sectors.

The Michigan National Guard, with five major installations and additional armories, plays a crucial role in the state’s defense efforts. Maj. Gen. Paul Rogers highlighted the potential for the ODAI to promote the full potential of Michigan’s training facilities through investment and awareness.

Michigan’s defense contracts reached $5.5 billion in 2022, ranking the state 22nd among states. There is a significant opportunity for Michigan to compete, win contracts, and drive greater economic impact in the defense and aerospace industry.

The establishment of the ODAI underscores Michigan’s commitment to protecting and growing the defense sector. With support from state officials, business leaders, and stakeholders, the ODAI aims to position Michigan as a national leader in defense and aerospace innovation.
