Sen. Joni Ernst Calls for Transparency in Foreign Aid for Small Businesses in Ukraine

Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa is intensifying her push for transparency in foreign aid by calling on the Inspector General to investigate how taxpayer dollars are being used to support small businesses in Ukraine.

In a follow-up letter to the Inspector General overseeing the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Senator Ernst, who is the ranking member of the Senate Small Business Committee, expressed frustration over the lack of clear responses regarding assistance provided to small businesses in Ukraine. She emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of taxpayer money.

Ernst raised concerns about projects funded by USAID in Ukraine, such as a fashion festival for Ukrainian streetwear brands, a trade mission to Bordeaux for young Ukrainian animator talents, and the design of expensive interior objects. She questioned the effectiveness of these initiatives in supporting Ukraine’s economy and reconstruction efforts.

USAID recently announced an additional $230 million to support Ukraine’s economy, in addition to the $61 billion allocated in a new bill signed by President Joe Biden to fend off Russia’s invasion. Senator Ernst criticized what she sees as wasteful spending and called for oversight to ensure that taxpayer funds are being used effectively.

She is requesting the Inspector General to provide information on the recipients of American taxpayer funds in Ukraine, details on expenditures, and measures to prevent funding from benefiting businesses with ties to Russia or competing with American companies.

The Office of Inspector General for USAID confirmed receipt of Senator Ernst’s letter and stated that oversight of U.S. assistance to Ukraine remains a top priority. They are reviewing her request and maintaining communication with congressional stakeholders on the matter.

Senator Ernst’s efforts to promote transparency and accountability in foreign aid spending reflect her commitment to ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used responsibly to support Ukraine’s efforts in the face of external threats.
