Putin’s State Visit to China Amidst Russian Offensive in Ukraine: Blinken Calls Out China’s Support
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China early Thursday morning for a two-day visit, where he is expected to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss pressing international issues and celebrate the strong diplomatic relations between their two countries.
This state visit marks Putin’s first in his new term and comes at a critical time as Russian forces have launched a major offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region of Ukraine, leading to the evacuation of thousands of civilians and putting additional pressure on Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently traveled to Kyiv and announced that the U.S. would continue to support Ukraine amid the attack by providing an additional $2 billion for weapons and equipment. Blinken also called out China for supplying Russia with nonlethal aid, stating that Chinese support is directly contributing to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Blinken emphasized that the U.S. is prepared to impose more sanctions on entities found to be supporting the Russian war effort and criticized China for fueling the biggest threat to Europe’s security since the end of the Cold War while seeking closer relations with Europe.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the world will be closely watching the outcome of Putin’s visit to China and the discussions between the two leaders. For more information, you can read the full report on TheHill.com.
