Partnership between Vanderbilt University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to Develop Dependable AI for National Security Applications

Vanderbilt University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory announced a groundbreaking partnership during the Tennessee Valley Corridor 2024 National Summit in Nashville to develop science-based AI assurance methods for national security applications. This collaboration aims to ensure the safety, accuracy, and reliability of AI-enabled systems deployed in challenging environments.

The partnership will leverage Vanderbilt’s expertise in learning-enabled cyber-physical systems and ORNL’s capabilities in computing and AI security to address emerging AI threats. Together, they will focus on enabling the U.S. Air Force to fully utilize autonomous vehicles, such as the AI-enabled X-62A VISTA, for vital national security roles.

This initiative has garnered support from key political figures, including Sen. Marsha Blackburn and Sen. Bill Hagerty, who emphasize the importance of technological dominance in national security. U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann also highlights the potential of AI and autonomous vehicles to enhance military operations in contested environments.

Overall, this collaborative research program underscores Tennessee’s commitment to advancing AI technologies for national security and maintaining global leadership. The partnership between Vanderbilt University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory is poised to make significant contributions to the development of dependable AI systems for defense applications.
