California State Controller Malia Cohen Addresses Black Wealth Brunch Hosted by ABWA SF Chapter

California State Controller Malia Cohen delivered an inspiring keynote speech at the Black Wealth Brunch hosted by the Enterprising Women Networking SF Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) in San Francisco. The event, held at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, aimed to address the racial wealth gap in Black and Brown communities.

With over 50 business women in attendance, Cohen emphasized the importance of financial wellness, wealth building, and the preservation of wealth for Black and Brown families. ABWA’s mission to empower businesswomen through leadership, education, and networking support was highlighted throughout the event.

Attendees were treated to a delicious soul food brunch catered by Chef Sharon Lee of The Spot, featuring a variety of dishes including skewered shrimp, chicken, blackened salmon, and mac and cheese. Cohen discussed the economic disparities faced by women and people of color, sharing statistics and a new initiative aimed at providing personal finance courses for every public school student in California.

By equipping students with financial education, Cohen hopes to close the wealth gap and provide opportunities for all to reach their full financial potential. She emphasized the importance of introducing financial principles to future generations to prevent a cycle of poverty.

Audience members were encouraged to support the initiative on the November 2024 ballot, with ABWA SF Chapter Vice President Velma Landers emphasizing the importance of networking and learning together to build generational wealth. The event served as a platform for women to come together, uplift each other, and support the next generation of California students in making informed financial decisions.
