Experts Discuss Data Challenges and Opportunities in the Intelligence Community at 2024 Intel Summit
The Intelligence Community is undergoing a transformation to become more data-centric and interoperable, with a focus on leveraging new technologies and approaches to information sharing. At the recent 2024 Intel Summit hosted by the Potomac Officers Club, experts discussed the importance of trust and assurance in unlocking the benefits of data.
One key topic of discussion was the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in handling large amounts of data. Rich Baich, senior vice president and chief information security officer of AT&T, emphasized the importance of data quality, access speed, and algorithmic solutions in driving the results of AI.
Mark Munsell, director of data and digital innovation at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, highlighted the need for high-quality data when training AI models, especially in areas like computer vision. Erik Blasch, program officer at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, outlined three components of data assurance: determining assured data, sharing data processes, and applying generative approaches.
Federal agencies are recognizing the need for more data to train AI systems accurately, leading to a focus on data assurance and sharing standards. Ian Fowlie, chief of engineering at the Defense Intelligence Agency, discussed the challenges of spreading data across multiple organizations and the importance of establishing common standards for metadata.
Overall, the panelists emphasized the need for a more data-centric and interoperable approach within the Intelligence Community and the federal government. The upcoming GovCon International Summit hosted by the Potomac Officers Club will further explore how the U.S., its allies, and industry partners are collaborating to address geopolitical challenges.
