Exploring the Landscape of DIU’s Blue UAS and AUVSI’s Green UAS Manufacturer Programs

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) have been making waves in the autonomous drone industry with their Blue UAS and Green UAS programs, respectively. These programs aim to provide a pathway for U.S.-made drone OEMs to secure government contracts in the wake of anti-Chinese drone laws.

The DIU’s Blue program, which originated from the FY20 National Defense Authorization Act, has been instrumental in vetting drones and components for government use. However, with limited funding and resources, DIU has had to adapt to a more demand-responsive process, working closely with end-users to meet their specific needs.

On the other hand, AUVSI’s Green UAS program offers a similar pathway for companies that may have been unable to access the Blue program. By mirroring Blue requirements and adding additional security measures, Green UAS aims to provide companies with a real badge of NDAA compliance.

Both programs have seen success in the past year, with companies like Skyfront’s Perimeter 8+ attaining Green UAS certification. With ongoing efforts to streamline the certification process, AUVSI expects to add more companies to the cleared list in the near future.

In addition to these programs, there are other avenues for U.S. drone OEMs to secure government contracts, including Production-Other Transaction agreements, the Defense Logistics Agency’s Tailored Logistics Support Program, and the Army’s Common Hardware Systems contract vehicle.

Overall, the government’s increasing demand for autonomous drone technology presents a wealth of opportunities for OEMs in the autonomy space. By navigating the various pathways available, companies can position themselves for lucrative government deals and contribute to the advancement of autonomous technology in the defense sector.
