Ukraine Bans Official Use of Telegram App Over National Security Concerns
In a move to safeguard national security, Ukraine has imposed restrictions on the use of the popular messaging app Telegram by government officials, military personnel, and employees of critical infrastructure sectors. The ban, announced by the National Coordination Centre for Cybersecurity (NCCC), comes amidst concerns that the app is being exploited by adversaries to launch cyber attacks and gather intelligence.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence agency, emphasized that the issue with Telegram goes beyond freedom of speech and directly impacts national security. The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine has pointed out that the app is being used by hostile entities to spread phishing messages, track users’ locations, and aid in targeting Ukrainian facilities with drones and missiles.
While the ban applies to official devices of certain government employees and critical infrastructure operators, it does not extend to personal phones or individuals using the app for official duties. Telegram, in response to the ban, has reiterated its commitment to user privacy and stated that it does not share personal data with any country, including Russia.
This development follows the recent arrest of Telegram’s CEO in France in connection with investigations into the misuse of the app for illicit activities. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by messaging platforms in balancing user privacy with national security concerns.
